New Jersey State Police don't rank their fugitives, but one name looms large. Perhap's New Jersey's most notorious fugitive and the only woman on the FBI's list of most wanted terrorists, Chesimard, who now goes by Assata Shakur, was convicted for the 1973 killing of New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster.Chesimard was in a car on the New Jersey Turnpike with two other black nationalists when Foerster and another trooper pulled the car over, leading to a confrontation and a shootout that left Foerster and one of Chesimard's compatriots, Zayd Malik Shakur, dead. Chesimard, who was wounded in the shootout, later escaped prison and fled to Cuba, where she holds asylum status and maintains her innocence. A dedicated group of supporters insist to this day she was framed and wrongly convicted for the killing.
